Saratoga Capital is focusing on infrastructure opportunities in Indonesia with a particular emphasis on power and telecommunications, according to Sandiaga Uno, one of the firm’s founding partners. "We have been active in natural resources but with commodity prices now feeling the pinch we have been looking more at infrastructure," he says. "The question is whether private equity can deliver above market returns for these kinds of long-gestation projects. But we were able to do this in the past with Towers Bersama and now we are crystallizing similar returns in our power portfolio." Following the general and presidential elections last year, many investors hoped to see a more active transaction market. Following the general and presidential elections last year, many investors hoped to see a more active transaction market. Uno claims to see momentum in the smaller investment space but this has yet to filter through to all parts of the market. However, tighter liquidity has made entrepreneurs more willing to consider selling their businesses to private equity. "The key is to convince them that ceding control does not really mean they lose their business," Uno explains. "We would work in partnership with them and improve governance, execution and management. We have a fixed for staying in the company so we would say that, once the investment is ready to be harvested, they can regain control if they can provide the capital." As for the groups competing with private equity for deals, the hedge funds and banks that were once so active have to a certain extent been replaced by family conglomerates. "They look at these businesses not only to increase their footprint but also cross-breed synergies in their portfolio of investments," Uno says. "But I am optimistic. Private equity offers a capital solution, particularly for medium-sized companies that want to graduate to world class, regional companies."

Brahmal Vasudevan first wanted to invest in Indonesia six years ago when he was with India-focused GP ChrysCapital. Now, as CEO of Creador, the private equity firm he set up last year, Vasudevan has his wish. Creador is seeking to raise around $350 million for its India and Southeast Asia-focused vehicle, and 40-50% of the corpus is earmarked for Indonesia. "Indonesia in many senses reminds me of India 8-9 years ago," Vasudevan tells AVCJ TV. "I'd been investing in India since 2000, well before it became favored by many funds, and you see many of the same challenges of investing in a market in its early stage." Chief among these is a lack of familiarity with private equity. This means the range of investment opportunities is narrower, company management is more difficult to access, and it takes longer to execute transactions because entrepreneurs need to be educated on the purpose of private equity and the kinds of terms and conditions that come with investments. "We are reverting back to our bottom-up approach as opposed to the intermediary approach," says Vasudevan. "We are meeting with a lot of companies, not necessarily with view to them raising money immediately but definitely in terms of cultivating that experience." The nascent stage of development of the Indonesia market is a positive in that Creador sees relatively few rivals for the mid-market deals it typically pursues. Entrepreneurs have traditionally looked to debt financing, accepting relatively high interest rates on debt-based products due to wariness about sacrificing equity and the high growth many see in their businesses. Vasudevan expects attitudes to change over time, but he stresses the importance of a local presence in order to seize opportunities when they emerge. "Our office here is led by Cyril Noerhadi, a senior managing director who has spent 48 years out of the 50 years of his life here," Vasudevan adds. "He is well known and well respected individual with great access to companies and people. That is absolutely critical. I don't think there is any other way of investing in a market like this."

Big Data causing Big Network Headaches? Join us on Thursday, January 30th @ 2PM EST and let us ease your pain! http://www.planb4sales.com/events We can provide 100% guaranteed delivery of every bit of your Big Data to the most WAN disadvantaged destinations on Earth at LAN like speeds. THE PROBLEM: Network performance is a common expectation today for all user communities. Yet, long-haul networks and communication paths can prove unreliable -- even unusable -- for sending large data files or caching localized content at distant locations. For many organizations, supporting dispersed and disadvantaged users can be problematic, expensive and difficult. Although not obvious to most, the "disadvantaged" user often accesses data via complex networks with varying levels of bandwidth throughout the communications path*. Due to the nature of TCP/IP and long distance networks, high value mobile workers are often impacted by network congestion, latency -- even lost connections -- at the most inopportune time. Many WAN accelerators claim to have the solution for the mobile user. Few, however, address the total need of the disadvantaged, distant user found in diverse and distributed organizations today. Register now for the free webinar to learn about a new, cost effective approach to address the needs of the often referred, "disadvantaged" user. http://www.planb4sales.com/events WE WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO: • Cost-effectively provide speed increases from 3x -- 100x on any IP network across the entire communications link! (Many WAN accelerators address single portions of multi-hop links.) • Assure all data transmissions are 100% accurate, even under extreme conditions, for all data needs (including idiosyncratic, compressed, and even encrypted data). • Centrally deploy and manage thousands of users -- with minimal headcount, training and use existing hardware -- no added footprint or expensive special-purpose hardware! • Get started with a simple test, to predict how Flume will improve data transmission for your network, even under severe conditions of latency, network congestion and intermittency. Join PlanB4Sales and Saratoga Data Systems for a presentation of game changing capabilities Thursday, January 30th at 2PM Eastern. SIGN UP NOW AT ( www.planb4sales.com/events ) Flume is an advanced file transfer and synchronization tool that significantly accelerates data transfers across global networks. Traditional TCP/IP based tools work well on local area networks but slow down and frequently abort as distances, congestion and network intermittencies increase. Flume works by virtually eliminating the challenges of latency and mitigating the effects of line degradation/congestion that limit traditional IP transfer technologies. By using Flume, a company can now move critical data across the internet faster and easier than ever before. Contact us to learn more - INFO@SARATOGADATA.COM

The competitive environment for private equity deals in Asia is less intense than at any time in the last 10 years as players investing before the global financial crisis have pared back their activity, says Kyle Shaw, founder and managing director at Shaw Kwei & Partners. Pre-2009, investment banks were committing capital from their balance sheets, hedge funds were targeting private equity deals and strategic investors were very keen for exposure to Asia, and China specifically. The situation has since turned on its head. “Today the investment banks are restricted from doing private equity so you find they aren’t investing; hedge funds have completely separated themselves from private equity and they aren’t doing it anymore; strategic investors in Europe and North America seem to be hesitant about committing investment capital to China; and some of the GPs that had set up in Asia are now closing their Asian offices and retreating back to Europe or North America,” Shaw says. There has also been a change in the nature of the transactions available, which could play into the hands of Shaw Kwei, a control investor focused on China and Southeast Asia. The growth capital thesis whereby a PE investor would support capacity expansion ahead of an IPO and seek a 4x return on exit has been called into question by challenging IPO markets and slower growth. “Most of the companies we looked at needed new money to expand capacity, buy new equipment, to meet what they saw as a growing market demand,” Shaw says. “Today that has changed dramatically. There is not the sort of growth for companies. They are typically looking at a very competitive marketplace where they are trying to improve profits as opposed to simply grow sales.” Shaw Kwei is also seeing more buyout opportunities from three sources: succession planning situations where the founder has no children interested in taking over his business; shareholder disputes that can only be resolved by selling to a third party; and then distress and restructuring.
